GBT2025 Final – Day 2

GBT2025 Tour Final: Dundonald Practice Round
The Practice Round – Setting the Tone
Monday morning brought perfect weather and that unmistakable buzz that only Dundonald Links can deliver.
Originally designed by Willie Fernie in 1911 and masterfully reimagined by Kyle Phillips in 2003, Dundonald has become one of Scotland’s premier championship venues — modern, yet steeped in golfing heritage.
With practice round bragging rights up for grabs, the finalists headed out to familiarise themselves with the course and test their form ahead of the big day.
In superb scoring conditions, Steve Critchley produced an excellent round, posting 38 points to take the Practice Round Win, with Matt Watts close behind on 37. The form book suggested Watts could be the man to beat when the real pressure began.
The Caddie Draw – The Three Idiots Tradition
That evening, the group headed to The Three Idiots Indian Restaurant, where the now-famous GBT Caddie Draw was to take place — a tradition that has become a highlight of every final.
With superb food, brilliant service, and laughter all around, the evening set the perfect tone for the final days ahead. The caddies were drawn after the practice round for the first time this year — adding an extra layer of suspense and strategy to proceedings.
Here’s how the draw unfolded:
-
Brian Boys (Tour Leader) had first pick and selected Tim Roberts, last year’s winning caddie and GBT Founder.
-
Matt Watts, second to pick, chose Philip Palmer, ex-Tour Professional and Managing Director of Teknobu.
-
Mike Birchall drew Steve Critchley, GBT Founder, four-time Tour Finalist, and self-proclaimed “best caddie” on tour.
-
Robin Raymond rounded out the draw, picking Martin Rayner, last year’s two-time GBT Champion.
Following the draw, everyone returned to the Dundonald Links clubhouse for a couple of nightcaps — and one final twist. A secret sweepstake was held, asking everyone to predict the final order of merit and points. For each correct answer, a point would be awarded… but more on that later.
The highlight of the practice round came on the iconic 11th hole, where Mark Brown delivered a moment to remember — a hole-in-one from 129 yards using a 9-iron. One smooth swing, a single bounce, and the ball never left the flag before dropping straight in! 🎯 It was Mark’s second ace of the year, an incredible achievement that added even more magic to an already unforgettable away trip. What are the odds on that?
